LGLC Annual Meeting and Block Party Set for August 14

Bolton Landing, NY – The Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) is pleased to again host their Annual Meeting and Block Party at Up Yonda Farm Environmental Education Center, Saturday, August 14, from 11 am to 2 pm.

The public is invited to attend this free event, which includes live music by High Peaks Bluegrass, activities for kids and adults, and food for purchase from the Say Cheez 518 Food Truck. Up Yonda Farm’s exhibits include a butterfly house, children’s nature museum, pond exploration, and hiking trails.

At 11 am the LGLC will hold its annual meeting in Up Yonda’s auditorium, with guest speakers Rob Davies, Director of the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest and Lands Division, and Dr. Mark Whitmore, Forest Entomologist with the Department of Natural Resources, Cornell University.

Davies oversees the many DEC staff who are responsible for protecting land for the State and caring for that land. He is a trained forester, so he understands the importance of protecting and caring for land and particularly forests to protect water quality. Davies will discuss some of the State’s new initiatives and programs related to land protection and partnerships with land trusts such as the LGLC and how these new partnerships can help to reduce the negative effects of climate change, protect more forests and water quality, and better manage invasive forest pests.

Dr. Whitmore will be updating everyone as to the progress of the fight against the many invasive forest pests that have descended on Lake George and what we can do to stay on the alert for new invaders. He will focus on hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), including his groundbreaking new research using eDNA that offers new hope in the effort to manage HWA as this tool is able to track both pest and the bugs that eat it.

LGLC staff and directors will then provide brief updates, as well as conservation, stewardship, and outreach accomplishments, and financial status of the 2021 fiscal year.

All other activities, including food and music, will be available on the lawn from 11 am – 2 pm.

The LGLC is proud to be the only land trust dedicated to the protection of the Lake George watershed, providing immediate, permanent protection of the lake’s water quality through land conservation. The organization and its partners have permanently protected 11,924 acres of land and nearly 7 miles of Lake George shoreline through purchased and donated land acquisition, conservation easements and innovative community collaborations. In addition, the LGLC creates and maintains nearly 40 miles of trails for year-round recreation and educational opportunities.
